Our community school strategy integrates academics, health and wellness, social services, and expanded learning opportunities. We create supportive environments that help students thrive academically, socially, and emotionally through collaborative planning and community-based partnerships.

Out-of-School Time

We offer a variety of after-school and summer programs, including our flagship Power of Citizenry program. These initiatives engage students in leadership development, international affairs, and civic participation outside of regular school hours.

College & Career Readiness

Global Kids' Workforce & Job Readiness programs are designed to equip young people with the essential skills, knowledge, and experiences needed to successfully navigate the world of work and achieve their career goals.

Volunteer Opportunity: Martin Luther King Jr. National Day of Service Job Readiness Panel in NYC

Mark your calendars and join us for a day of service in support of our youth on Monday, January 19th, 2026. Global Kids will be hosting a special Career Panel & Mentorship Volunteer Event at our headquarters in Manhattan. We are in need of passionate professionals to serve as volunteer panelists to answer youth questions about college and career pathways, and to speak a bit about what you do and how you got there, including any twists and turns along the way!

Closing out our 2025 #GKTop10 with a look back at the incredible student council leaders at PS 96 who, guided by Global Kids, participated in a real-world voting and participatory budgeting process that empowered them to add to the conversation and make their voices heard. Students learned how to evaluate proposals, facilitate elections, advocate at district meetings, and see civic engagement in action, and their participation delivered tangible results: new air conditioning units for their school cafeteria!

This November, Yaretzi Vargas, a junior at Renaissance Charter School and dedicated Global Kids leader, took youth leadership to the global stage as she represented Global Kids at COP30 in Belém, Brazil. At COP30, she participated in international discussions, hands-on workshops, and volunteer initiatives focused on climate action and sustainability, collaborating with youth leaders from around the world.

Beyond the conference, Yaretzi immersed herself in the rich culture, traditions, and environment of Brazil by exploring notable local spots like Mercado Ver-o-Peso, considered to be the largest open-air market in Latin America, and the Rodrigues Alves Zoological-Botanical Garden, a green haven in the bustling city of Belém. This historic space for environmental conservation and scientific education houses more than 2,500 native Amazonian trees and diverse species of regional fauna. Yaretzi also visited Mangal das Garças Zoobotanical Park, a natural refuge for Amazonian flora and fauna along the banks of the Guamá River featuring dryland forests, floodplains and fields.

Yaretzi took her passion for conservation back to the States, where she is taking an agriculture class at Renaissance Charter and will facilitate an upcoming segment of our citywide program to share the knowledge and experiences she gained from her international travels with her peers.

The Senior Extravaganza in June was a powerful reflection of our College & Career Readiness pillar in action. Bringing together seniors from across NYC, we honored their commitment to planning for their futures; from college pathways to career goals. As students were recognized with stoles, pennants, and awards, we celebrated not only where they’re headed, but the growth, resilience, and leadership that carried them there. The Class of 2025 will always be part of the Global Kids community, and we remain part of their journey wherever their paths may lead.

Global Kids held its last fundraising event with the GK 5K Run/Walk/Push Family Day, bringing students together to celebrate movement, wellness, and community. Beyond physical activity, the day highlighted teamwork, perseverance, and the importance of getting outside and supporting one another. Experiences like these remind us how social-emotional wellness and healthy habits go hand in hand, strengthening both mind and body while building lasting connections.

M.S. 266 Park Place Community Middle School, students engaged in mental health awareness workshops led by Global Kids youth leaders. Through guided conversations and activities, students explored self-awareness, support, and advocacy — reinforcing the importance of social-emotional wellness and peer connection. This experience highlighted the power of youth leadership in creating spaces where mental health is openly discussed and supported.

Throwback to keeping it SCHOOL for the Summer with Global Kids through various summer programs serving youth of all ages, hundreds of internships, and summer-recap-worthy field trips to destinations like Six Flags, Con Edison’s Learning Center, the Bronx Zoo, and the Philadelphia Zoo. ☀️

Middle schoolers matriculating to high school in the fall received vital support from GK to prepare them for success during this critical transitional period, while elementary and middle school students enrolled in Summer Rising participated in hands-on STEM enrichment and community-building activities.

With GK’s support, students were able to spend their summer months gaining real-world experience, building leadership skills and authentic connections, and preparing for the next chapter of their respective academic journeys.

Next on our #GKTop10 of 2025 is number 8️⃣ → GK Youth from our Washington, D.C. schools came together in May 2025 for a day of youth-led workshops, performances, and powerful guest speakers, all centered around the critical topic of Mental Health, a topic that the youth themselves selected. Youth heard from special guest speaker Victor Juárez of @tuconsejeriala , who shared about the work he is doing to bridge the gap of mental healthcare access among underserved populations in Guatemala.

In addition to games, prizes, and insightful discussions, students also shared resources and strategies for mental health advocacy and building healthy coping mechanisms through art therapy. 🧠💙

Earlier this fall, Global Kids was named one of @cityandstateny Magazine’s 2025 Top Workplaces in NYC, in addition to several individual members of our leadership team who were spotlighted for their incredible work: Antonia Brown was honored with the NYCETC Opportunity Award; Olympia Wilson received the 2025 Quality Leadership Award from the Network for Youth; and VP of Finance Young Sook Na was highlighted as one of 2025’s Unsung Heroes by City & State Magazine for her work behind the scenes leveraging the latest technology to streamline fiscal operations at GK HQ.

We’re kicking off our annual Top 10 of 2025 calendar year recap with some incredible memories from GK-DC students’ trip to Puerto Rico back in July. From exploring Afro-Puerto Rican heritage in Loíza to kayaking through glowing bioluminescent bays, hiking El Yunque’s rainforest waterfalls, and connecting with local youth, our GK leaders experienced culture, adventure, and community in a multitude of ways that will positively impact their leadership abilities and the way they look at the world for years to come.

These intrepid adventurers also toured historic San Juan, tasted authentic mofongo, learned about Taíno traditions, played soccer with new friends, and visited Nuestra Escuela, a school that, like Global Kids, is built on the foundational belief that every student’s voice matters.

Hillary, a senior at Bronxdale High School, excels academically with a 96% GPA and membership in the National Honor Society. She has taken college-level classes since freshman year and participated in programs at Harvard, Morehouse, Howard, and NYU.

Beyond academics, Hillary leads by example. She helps incoming freshmen transition through a peer-to-peer group, represents students on the Christopher Columbus Youth Council and Bronx DA Youth Council, and tutors classmates who need extra support. She also balances athletics — softball, bowling, and gymnastics — and engages with Global Kids through open houses and the Women in Sports Leadership Institute, for which she earned the Amber Sabathia WiSL Scholarship.

On December 11th, Global Kids DC youth from the Citywide and @learn24dc programs explored plants from around the world at the U.S. Botanic Garden!

Students warmed up with hot chocolate, teamed up for a scavenger hunt, and discovered how different cultures use plants for medicine, food, and everyday life. Youth were able to make connections between nature, culture, and global knowledge.

A special highlight was welcoming students from @ballou_dc, making it a full day of learning, collaboration, and exploration across programs!

🌱 Bronx Lab Sustainability Career Panel

9th and 10th graders explored real pathways into the green economy at the @bronxlabschool Sustainability Career Panel! Students met with representatives from the South Street Seaport Museum, Bronx Zoo Wildlife Conservation, Rocking the Boat, the HOPE Program, Fordham University’s Green Jobs Center, and NYC Sanitation’s Circular Economy team.

They also had the chance to meet the Vice President of Fordham University and learn about the new Green Jobs Center opening in Fall 2026. 💼🌍

Flashback Friday for Native American Heritage Month 🌽📚
Students across Global Kids DC joined together for an Indigenous Heritage Month Tamalada, connecting food, history, and community. As they made (and ate!) tamales, youth learned about their pre-Columbian origins and how this tradition continues today in many Latino and Mexican-American families.

Through stations focused on global Indigenous foods, cultures, and laws, students reflected on identity, traditions, and how simple moments, like making tamales, can bring people together.

When Thandi first joined Global Kids in 10th grade, she wanted to fulfill a community service requirement – yet discovered a world far bigger than she knew. Drawn to our focus on global affairs and social justice, she became a youth leader and found a passion for environmental justice.

As a Global Kids Youth Ambassador, Thandi traveled to Dubai for the UN’s COP28 Climate Conference, where she engaged with new cultures, global leaders, and powerful ideas shaping our climate future.

Last Saturday, students from seven different Global Kids high schools attended the @newyorkurbanleague annual HBCU Fair at Riverbank State Park. Participants learned about different colleges, got real-life experience meeting admissions officers, and met students attending HBCUs now. Several students even received on-the-spot admissions and full scholarships to universities, including: Tougaloo College, University of Maryland Eastern Shore, Kentucky State University, and Virginia State University.

Students from Careers in Sports High School, Bronx Legacy, and BLA II came together for the Fall College Fair (presented by Global Kids), exploring pathways to higher education and beyond. 🎓

With reps from over 15 colleges, including SUNY Maritime, LIU, BCC, NYIT, City College ROTC, Southern Connecticut State University, and more. Over 200 students connected directly with admissions counselors, asked questions about programs and scholarships, and got the inside scoop on campus life.

We honor the life and legacy of Dr. Jane Goodall (1934–2025), a visionary scientist, activist, and humanitarian whose work transformed our understanding of the natural world and inspired generations to act for our shared planet.

In Global Kids’ earliest years, Jane Goodall’s path crossed with one of our very first participants, Tung Cheng, during a UN conference in 1989. What began as a student interview became a lasting correspondence and mentorship. Tung’s story reflects how early experiences with global leaders can spark a lifetime of curiosity, compassion, and civic engagement.

Jane Goodall’s impact reached far beyond the forests of Gombe. Her commitment to youth, peace, and the protection of all living things continues to inspire Global Kids’ mission today. 🌍

Flashback Friday, Tech Exploration with a special guest, CompuConstruct at @ps109school

This summer 14 middle school students learned about the world of computer building with tech expert Keith Taylor. Not only did they learn about the inner workings of a computer, but they also built functioning machines from scratch!

Students not only explored the components of a PC, but also applied their problem-solving skills in real time. Take a look at the highlights from this exciting summer STEM project!

On Friday, September 26, 2025, the Mayor’s Office of International Affairs (@nycinternationalaffairs) hosted youth from across New York City to share their ideas on how youth can tackle mental health at an #UNGA side event titled “NYC Youth-Led Roundtable on Mental Health.”

The event featured speakers and presentations from Global Kids, the Youth Publications and Socioeconomic Forum (@ypsforum), Teen Advocators (@teens_advocators), The Khipu Project (@thekhipuproject), the United Nations International Initiative for Racial Equality (@unire.international), and various city agencies.

We are extremely thankful to the Mayor’s Office of International Affairs for their commitment to supporting youth voices and acknowledging the youth mental health crisis at the margins of #UNGA80.

From classrooms to the global stage! On Sept 22, GK youth shared their ideas on climate and oceans at #UNGA80 side event panel “The Road from UNOC to COP30.”

Thanks to the skills, knowledge, and experiences they gained through Global Kids, these young leaders confidently took the stage and made their voices heard. With support from @peaceboatus and encouragement from NYC Assembly Member Emerita Torres, they showed what youth-driven solutions can look like in action.
