A happy-hour fundraiser for Global Kids' Human Right Activist Project (HRAP) trip to Kenya this summer took place on May 6, 2009 at Sidebar in NYC. The event, attended by over 150 people, raised more than $12,500. The evening featured a short presentation by Global Kids trainers Kevin Murungi and Catheirne Mbindiyo about the upcoming trip to Kenya, and a silent auction with an exciting variety of items.

Proceeds from the evening will be used to send six highly motivated Global Kids Leaders to Kenya this summer to learn about and contribute to the critical participation of youth in human rights campaigns, both in Kenya and in the U.S. Working with CARE International’s local project staff as well as the Green Belt Movement, the School for Field Studies and Youth Alive! Kenya, students will explore such topics as women’s and girls’ rights and empowerment, access to education and healthcare, environmental sustainability, and the importance of political participation, among others. GK students and local youth will collaboratively participate in and present workshops, share experiences, and engage in ongoing dialogue about the role of youth voices in impacting domestic and foreign policy issues. Upon their return from Kenya, students will develop peer education projects to raise awareness about these issues at their schools and in their communities.

Global Kids will continue to accept contributions to support the HRAP International trip to Kenya. Donors can contribute online or contact Arti Sheth at 212-226-0130 ext 106, asheth@globalkids.org.

Global Kids would like to thank the members of its Young Leaders Advisory Council for their critical participation in putting together this fundraiser.
