Participants in GK’s College and Career Readiness Program work with staff and volunteers to explore college options, visit campuses, meet with diplomats and business and nonprofit leaders to learn about career possibilities, and acquire such basic skills as resume preparation, interviewing, and essay writing. During 2007-2008, 94 seniors and 61 underclassmen participated in college and career workshops, received support with the college application process, and visited and interned at several NYC worksites. The program is conducted at our school-based and citywide sites and in collaboration with a number of organizational partners, including the Council on Foreign Relations, Adelphi University, and Fairleigh Dickinson University, all of which provide opportunities for the young people in the program. It is generously supported by the Alcoa Foundation, American Express, and the United Way of New York City. In recent years, participants have gone on to attend the following schools, among many others: Adelphi University, Bard College, Baruch College, Bay State College, Berklee College of Music, Borough of Manhattan Community College, Brandeis University, Columbia University, DeVry University, Fordham University, Franklin and Marshall College, Global College of Long Island University, Hunter College, Lafayette University, LaGuardia Community College, Medgar Evers College, Monroe College, Mount Holyoke College, New York University, Pace University, Pennsylvania State University, Queensbourough Community College, Rider University, St. John’s University, SUNY Albany, SUNY Oswego, SUNY Stonybrook, Tufts University, University of Hartford, University of New Haven, University of Maryland, York College, and more.
